Piccolo Mondo

Tucked away on Windsor Terrace in Southampton, Piccolo Mondo brings a slice of classic Italian comfort right to the heart of the city. From the moment you walk past its inviting outdoor seating area and into the cozy, relaxed interior, you know you’re in for more than just a meal-it’s a proper Italian experience. Whether you're popping in for a quick lunch, a solo dinner, or an indulgent late-night bite, Piccolo Mondo feels like the kind of place that gets under your skin-in a good way.

The menu leans into hearty, home-style dishes, but with refined touches that go beyond your average trattoria. The Lasagne Alla Romana hits that nostalgic note-oozing cheese, silky béchamel, and just the right amount of baked crisp on the edges. But for those who crave something creamy and rich, the Tagliatelle a La Creme or Tagliatelle Alfredo both deliver beautifully, especially when paired with a glass of Pinot Grigio or Rosé from their surprisingly thoughtful wine list.

For flavor-seekers looking for something bolder, the Chef’s Special Pizza 10 and the Chicken and Chorizo Tortellini bring a kick of spice and depth. The tortellini, in particular, balances the smoky heat of the chorizo with the juicy tenderness of the chicken-it’s a combination that sticks with you.

One dish that deserves its own spotlight is the Gnocchi Gorgonzola. Soft pillows of gnocchi dressed in a creamy blue cheese sauce-it’s unapologetically rich, deeply savory, and just plain addictive. And if you prefer something lighter, the Spaghetti Gamberetti with prawns offers a refreshing seafood option, with a garlicky olive oil base that doesn’t overpower.

Let’s not skip dessert-because Piccolo Mondo certainly doesn’t. The Tiramisu leans traditional, but in the best way-airy layers of mascarpone and espresso-soaked sponge, topped with a generous dusting of cocoa. If you’re feeling playful, the Espresso Martini Sorbet is a clever twist that somehow refreshes and perks you up all at once. For those chasing comfort, the Sticky Toffee Pudding or the silky Crème Brûlée are hard to say no to.

Drinks-wise, there's more than just wine on offer. The cocktail list includes familiar favorites like the Espresso Martini, and the selection of beer, spirits, and even vegan and vegetarian options mean no one’s left out. Whether you're raising a glass of chilled wine over a shared cheesy garlic bread, or sipping a bold red next to a plate of Carbonara with Penne Pasta, the vibe stays relaxed and unpretentious throughout.

And here's something that often gets overlooked but makes a difference: Piccolo Mondo is accessible, with a wheelchair-friendly entrance. The staff are attentive without hovering, striking a nice balance between casual and professional. It’s the kind of place where you can linger over your meal without feeling rushed-ideal for long conversations, quiet solo lunches, or even impromptu date nights.

Its popularity at both lunch and dinner says something. Locals seem to know this is where you go for reliable, soul-warming Italian food without the fluff. It’s also one of those rare spots where healthy options, small plates, and quick bites live side by side with indulgent, slow-paced feasting-whatever you’re in the mood for, there’s something to match.

So if you’re in Southampton and craving pasta done right, Piccolo Mondo might just be your next go-to. It’s casual but charming, familiar yet memorable, and whether you’re there for the onion soup starter or just popping by for a quick glass of wine, you’ll likely find yourself planning your next visit before you’ve even paid the bill.

The best Italian food I've had since returning to the UK. It's 100% close to the taste of Italian cuisine.

Came here pre covid and loved it. Visited again last night and have to say it was exactly as I remembered, food was lovely, well priced, really tasty and good sized portions. The service was top notch, nothing too much trouble. Honestly one of the best Italian restaurants I’ve been to in the last 20+ years and we’ve already said next time we’re in Southampton we will definitely be eating here again

Beautiful little restaurant, calming environment, relaxed music and phenomenal service. Friendly staff and attentive but not overly so Food was out of this world, great Salmon Tagliatelle and garlic bread to share- pictured is the half and served two hungry adults Coffee was expertly made and really refreshing to get lemon and ice water for the table. An old custom thats great to see come back Incredibly flavourful food, especially the profiteroles! A classic restaurant we will be returning to Would reccomend booking in advance as near the Mayflower theater and very popular after shows. Today (Thursday) fully booked between 5-7pm

We visited this resturant after a family member said they had been and loved it, we were not disappointed. We managed to reserve online and when we arrived the place was full. There are only around 30ish covers. It’s such a lovely resturant the service is second to none. We felt so welcome. We had starters and a main each, we will likely do main and dessert next time as some of them looked lovely but we didn’t have any room left! Nicole and Carmo are wonderful. They are attentive but not too much, happy to explain and talk to you without feeling rushed and it was just such a pleasant experience. This is not a chain restaurant and wow do you feel the difference. The food is made in what feels like the teeniest kitchen but what comes out of there is fresh, tasty and great portion sizes. We will be back! The front is small, unsuspecting but inside if you step in, you will be transported to a world you wouldn’t have thought possible. Highly recommended.
